How to start with the ESMH Gantt Planner, where to find your Pro licence key, how to remove your data, and how to reach us when something does not work.

  • Google Sheets add-on: start, your Pro licence key, several Google accounts, removing your data
  • Google Sheets template
  • Excel version
  • Support
  • Report a problem

Google Sheets add-on

The ESMH Gantt Planner add-on puts the planner into any spreadsheet in Google Sheets. One add-on covers Free and Pro: it works as the Free edition until you enter a Pro licence key. It is not out yet: Google reviews it before it appears in the Google Workspace Marketplace. Once Google approves it, you install it from there. Until then, the free Google Sheets version is a copy of our template (see Google Sheets template).

Install and start

Once the add-on is out, install ESMH Gantt Planner from its page in the Google Workspace Marketplace, or in Google Sheets with Extensions > Add-ons > Get add-ons. Google shows the three permissions the add-on asks for; the privacy policy explains each one. You need Google Sheets in a desktop web browser and a personal or work Google account. At work, your administrator may decide which add-ons can be installed.

Then open a spreadsheet, a new one is best, and choose Extensions > ESMH Gantt Planner > Start. The planner asks whether you want the example project, then sets up a chart, a dashboard and a short guide.

Everything is in the menu under Extensions > ESMH Gantt Planner:

  • New Gantt chart and Edit project;
  • Add task, Add milestone and Edit task, and under Tasks: duplicate, delete, mark complete, indent and outdent, move up and down, link and unlink;
  • View (daily to yearly) and Timeline (set up the timeline, move it earlier or later, scroll to today);
  • Display options, and Groups to expand or collapse the phases;
  • Dashboard, Resources, Settings and Export;
  • Quick guide, About, and Upgrade to Pro (in Pro: Licence).

You can also type a task name in the grey “Type here to add a new task” row.

Free and Pro

The Free edition has one chart with up to 30 tasks (phases and milestones count as tasks) and finish-to-start links without lag. Commands marked “(Pro)” open the Upgrade to Pro window, which lists what Pro adds. Pro is a one-time purchase; see pricing.

Your Pro licence key

Pro is unlocked with the licence key from your purchase on Whop. To find it:

  • go to whop.com and sign in with the account you bought with;
  • click your profile picture and choose Orders;
  • open your ESMH Gantt Pro purchase and copy the key under “Your Pro licence key”.

ESMH Gantt Pro for Google Sheets and the Excel + Google Sheets bundle come with a key that unlocks Pro in the add-on. Both go on sale once the add-on is out. Pro for Excel alone does not unlock it.

In Google Sheets, choose Extensions > ESMH Gantt Planner > Upgrade to Pro, paste the key and click Activate Pro. Pro then works in every spreadsheet you use with that Google account, and a Free planner becomes Pro in place, with your plan as it is. In Pro, Extensions > ESMH Gantt Planner > Licence shows the active licence and when it was last checked.

The add-on checks the key with Whop when you activate it and about once a week after that. If Whop cannot be reached, Pro stays on and the add-on tries again a day later. The privacy policy says exactly what is sent.

If moving a Free plan into the Pro layout stops half-way, your plan is kept in the hidden sheet “ESMH Gantt backup”. Open Extensions > ESMH Gantt Planner > Licence and click Finish the upgrade.

Signed in to several Google accounts

This is a limit of all Google Sheets add-ons. When you are signed in to several Google accounts in the same browser, the add-on’s windows only work in your default account, the one you signed in with first. In any other account, saving in a window fails with an error such as “PERMISSION_DENIED”.

To work around it, use the planner in your default account, or open Google Sheets in a separate browser profile, or in a private window, where only the account you want is signed in.

Other limits

  • The menu and windows work in Google Sheets in a desktop web browser, not in the Sheets apps for phones and tablets.
  • The add-on has no arrow buttons above the task names. Use Timeline > Move timeline earlier and Move timeline later instead.

Removing your data

  • Your plan is part of your spreadsheet. Delete the spreadsheet, or, to keep its other sheets, delete the planner’s sheets: your chart sheets, Dashboard, Help and the hidden sheets Settings and Resources (show them first with View > Hidden sheets). If an upgrade to Pro stopped half-way, there is also the hidden sheet “ESMH Gantt backup”.
  • Your licence data is kept in your Google account, also after a licence has stopped. Choose Extensions > ESMH Gantt Planner > Licence (in the Free edition: Upgrade to Pro, which opens the Licence window while a key is stored), click Remove from this account and click again to confirm.
  • The add-on. If a licence key is stored, remove the licence data first. Then, in Google Sheets, choose Extensions > Add-ons > Manage add-ons and uninstall ESMH Gantt Planner there.
  • Its permissions. Go to myaccount.google.com/permissions, choose ESMH Gantt Planner and remove its access.

The add-on sends us no copy of your plan, so there is nothing of it to delete on our side. Its error logs are deleted after 30 days, and you can ask us about any other data we hold (see the privacy policy).

Google Sheets template

Until the add-on is out, the free Google Sheets version comes as a template through Whop, after a quick free sign-up. Open the template link in your Whop purchase and click Use Template to make your own copy. In your copy, everything is in the ESMH Gantt menu next to Help. The first time you use it, Google asks you to allow the script in your copy and shows a one-time “unverified app” screen (why).

Your plan stays in your copy. To remove it, delete the copy.

Excel version

The Excel version needs desktop Microsoft Excel 2016 or later, or Microsoft 365, on Mac or Windows. It does not run in Excel on the web or on iPad. Everything is on the ESMH GANTT tab of the ribbon.

  • Macros. When you open the planner, click Enable Macros (Mac) or Enable Content (Windows). If Windows blocks the macros because the file came from the internet, close the file, right-click it, choose Properties, tick Unblock and click OK. Then open it again.
  • From Free to Pro. Open the Pro file, click Import Plan on the ESMH GANTT tab and choose your Free file. Its charts come over as they are, and if you like, its people, working days and holidays too. The Free file is not changed.
  • Your data. Your plan stays in your workbook, and the Excel version sends nothing to us. To remove it, delete the file.

Support

Write to gantt@esmhconsulting.com. To help us answer quickly, please tell us:

  • which version you use: the Google Sheets add-on, the Google Sheets template or Excel, and Free or Pro;
  • your browser, or your Excel version and whether you use a Mac or Windows;
  • what you want to do, and where you are stuck.

For questions about a licence or a refund, give the email address of your Whop account. If Pro is not right for you, write to us within 14 days of your purchase and we refund it in full (see the terms).

Report a problem

Email gantt@esmhconsulting.com with the subject “Problem report” and include:

  • the steps that lead to the problem, from opening the file or spreadsheet;
  • what you expected, and what happened instead;
  • the exact error message, or a screenshot;
  • the version (Google Sheets add-on, template or Excel; Free or Pro) and your browser or Excel version.

If the problem depends on your plan, you can attach a copy of the file or share a copy of the spreadsheet with us. Remove anything confidential first. We use it only to find and fix the problem.
